What I learned in the 3 months I’ve been in Africa:

1. No country looks the same
     • South Africa- felt more westernized in J-bay, but it was still Africa. And ministry opportunity was so much more and amazing than I expected.
     • Botswana- was definitely the “culture shock” type of month. We literally only had to drive 5 minutes to see wild African animals on the sides of the road.
     • Zambia- this is the “Africa” I was hoping to find. Not necessarily on the living side but ministry wise, it’s the best and most filled days.

2. Food
     • Coca Cola is popular
     • “pop”/ samp is found here, they just have different names and are made differently
     • you will not starve

3. Sunsets in Africa are the best.

4. Cramming 7 people into a tiny 5 seat car is a thing. Same with cramming 10 people into a small van. And 8-10 people on the back of a pick-up truck.

5. Sand is everywhere, but only in J-Bay, South Africa will you find a beach.

6. You can sleep 6 people in a tiny 3 bed room. It makes sleeping feel safe.

7. 15 hour bus rides to the next country are normal.

8. Never would I have thought that I would Shiver in South Africa, Sweat in Botswana, and be Drenched in Zambia.

9. Head wraps are my favourite, and Chitenges are my new ”skirts”.

10. Time is only a number, it’s what you do with that number that makes it worth it. You will never not be early or late. 🙂

11. Finally, you will meet new people who make you realize what you’re here for… EVERY month.

Hope you all enjoyed this blog about the things I’ve learned from Africa. I’m going to miss it, but what’s to come is still exciting!

Love,

Laiky Bakes!

  1. Thanks for sharing about the things you have learned in Africa as many of us will never get these experiences.
